What is the 12-Step Program?

The 12-step program was first developed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). AA is an international organization of peer groups that meet regularly to discuss their addiction situation. Once AA had developed the 12-step program, many facilities utilized this program to help treat people with drug (meth, benzodiazepines prescription pills) or alcohol addiction

The 12 steps are:

  1. Admitting powerlessness over the addiction
  2. Believing that a higher power (in whatever form) can help
  3. Deciding to turn control over to the higher power
  4. Taking a personal inventory
  5. Admitting to the higher power, oneself, and another person the wrongs done
  6. Being ready to have the higher power correct any shortcomings in one’s character
  7. Asking the higher power to remove those shortcomings
  8. Making a list of wrongs done to others and being willing to make amends for those wrongs
  9. Contacting those who have been hurt, unless doing so would harm the person
  10. Continuing to take personal inventory and admitting when one is wrong
  11. Seeking enlightenment and connection with the higher power via prayer and meditation
  12. Carrying the message of the 12 Steps to others in need

The 12-step program aims to release the patient from the burden of addiction by going through steps to achieve each goal one by one. Allowing patients to surrender their problems to a higher power will provide lasting peace for the individual. This kind of treatment helps patients maintain and achieve sobriety when each step is taken into account. Life skills will also be provided to assist patients after treatment at our addiction recovery center in Louisville, KY.

Why Life Skills are Necessary for Recovery

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, around 40-60% of people with a substance use disorder had relapsed after treatment. Most of the time, when people leave a treatment facility, they think they are fully cured. However, there can still be a risk of relapse for some people. When this risk comes around after treatment, it’s best to remember the life skills taught by our professionals at our addiction recovery center in Louisville, KY.

Our 12-step program and life skills are important to living an independent life away from substances. Gaining the ability to cope and develop self-awareness will make daily life more enjoyable and easier. Patients will be able to learn life skills catered to their individual needs. Everyone’s condition and situation are different. Therefore, everyone will gain specialized life skills that will benefit them the most on a daily basis. These programs will help in improving the patient’s quality of life after treatment.

If you do not have the confidence to live life independently, going through our 12-step program and learning beneficial life skills will help in building confidence. When patients manage these skills, they will be able to further maintain their sobriety. Don’t wait in getting beneficial treatment that will help your future. Get help today at Louisville Addiction Center to find peace within your life without substances.

How Effective is the 12-Step Program?

The 12-step program has been proven to be very effective. However, this does depend on the patient. Just like any other program, if the patient does not have the means to improve their lives, the program will be less effective. When patients put their all into wanting to live without substances, these programs will prove to be very effective in their lives. This determination should also be held after treatment.

When patients start out motivated but lose their spirit in the program, they will start to have a difficult time maintaining sobriety. When patients keep up with what they have been taught and use it in their daily lives, they will find it easier to maintain a sober life. Having a healthy mentality and attitude toward recovery will benefit those who take it seriously and want to keep at it after treatment.

The 12-step program can help anyone who is going through an addiction, dual diagnosis, or any other mental health condition they are dealing with. Once patients have a full understanding of each step, they can help others in need as well. As a result, this will keep patients and others accountable for maintaining sobriety in their lives. Over time, relationships can develop with peers who may think they don’t need treatment for their addiction, motivating them to get what they need to recover.

LAC was great. I participated in the evening groups through zoom, which I originally had reservations about. Even though the meetings were online, they were still very engaging, informative, and personal. The therapist and case manager were incredible. They were both very authentic and supportive, and they were easily available when we needed them. I am very appreciative and grateful for this program.

I’ve had great success with the individuals i’ve sent to LAC. I’ve been impressed with the smooth Admissions process in the stressful situations. The compassion they receive after arriving and the level of care is as good as anywhere out there. Most definitely will continue to use LAC

LAC is an amazing treatment facility. Truly a 5 * place for treatment. From ownership, leadership to general staff this place is incredible. The therapist, Techs and speakers are all first class. The housing, if doing PHP like I participated in was also perfect. I met so many incredible people. It’s unreal to be honest. I today this day still stay in contact with most residents who I attended with. Thank you LAC for not only all of your help but also continued support!!!

I had the opportunity to tour and attend the open house for Louisville Addiction Center on 2/22/23. As and individual in recovery and also working for SUD, I couldn’t be more impressed with the facility and approach that LAC is taking and offering those affected by substance abuse. If you or a loved one is struggling, this facility would provide the treatment, love and comfort your family member deserves.
